How dental insurance actually works

Dental insurance exists to make prevention affordable, and that is exactly where it delivers the most value. Most plans cover routine cleanings and exams generously, sometimes fully, because catching a problem early is cheaper for everyone involved, including your insurance company.

Where plans get confusing is in the detail: annual maximums, deductibles, waiting periods, and the percentage split across different categories of treatment. Our insurance coordinators handle that paperwork for you and translate it into one straightforward number before you agree to anything. You will never leave our Fort Worth office wondering what a procedure is actually going to cost you.

  • Coverage options - plans come as individual, family, or group coverage, so you can choose what suits your situation.

  • Insurance networks - plans often have networks of dentists who provide services at agreed rates; in-network usually means a lower out-of-pocket cost.

  • Coverage by procedure - plans typically pay a percentage per category, with preventive care often fully covered or subject to a small copay.

  • Maximums and deductibles - the annual maximum caps what the plan pays in a year; the deductible is what you pay before it starts contributing.

Typical Structure

What your plan is likely to cover

Most dental plans, regardless of carrier, group treatment into three broad tiers. The exact percentages vary by plan and employer, but the pattern below holds true for the majority of patients we see at our Fort Worth practice.

Preventive care

Cleanings, routine exams, X-rays, and often sealants. This is usually the most generously covered category, frequently at or near 100%.

Basic services

Fillings, simple extractions, and non-surgical periodontal treatment. Commonly covered at a partial percentage after any deductible is met.

Major services

Crowns, bridges, dentures, and surgical procedures. Typically the lowest percentage covered and the most likely category to involve a waiting period.

The Upside

What insurance is worth to you

Insurance is not just a line item on a paycheck. When it is used well, it changes how often you see a dentist, how comfortable you feel calling us about a broken tooth, and how much a surprise problem costs you in the end.

Affordable preventive care

Cleanings and exams at little or no cost to you, which is exactly what keeps expensive treatment from ever becoming necessary in the first place.

Cost savings on treatment

A meaningful share of restorative work gets covered, and in-network rates apply to whatever balance is left for you to pay.

Emergency dental coverage

Cover for urgent problems, so if you need an emergency dentist in Fort Worth on a Friday afternoon, that visit is not also a financial emergency.

New patients can also start with our $99 new patient special, which covers an exam, X-rays, and a cleaning, often less than the cost of a single month's insurance premium. Questions Patients Ask Us Most

Dental insurance questions, answered honestly

Do you accept my dental insurance plan?

We accept and file most major dental plans, including Delta Dental, MetLife, Cigna, BlueCross BlueShield, and Aetna. If your carrier is not on that list, call us at (817) 720-0121 with your plan name and group number. We handle a wide range of PPO plans and can usually tell you over the phone whether we are in-network or can still file an out-of-network claim for you.

Will you verify my benefits before I come in?

Yes. Before any planned treatment, our insurance coordinator contacts your carrier directly to confirm your remaining annual maximum, deductible status, and the percentage your plan pays for the specific procedure you need. We give you an estimate in writing before you agree to treatment, so there are no surprises on your statement afterward.

What happens if I have reached my annual maximum?

Once your plan's annual maximum is used up, you are responsible for the remaining cost of treatment for the rest of that plan year. In that case, we will go over options like splitting remaining work between this year and next, our in-house membership plan for an immediate discount, or Cherry financing to spread payments over several months without a hard credit check.

I do not have dental insurance. What are my options?

Our in-house membership plan gives uninsured patients 15% off treatment with no annual maximum, no waiting periods, and no claim paperwork. New patients often start with our $99 new patient special, which includes an exam, X-rays, and a cleaning. Call (817) 720-0121 and we will walk you through which option makes the most financial sense for you.

Does insurance cover emergency dental visits?

Most plans do cover emergency exams and treatment, often in the basic or major services category depending on what is needed. If you need an emergency dentist in Fort Worth and are not sure whether your plan applies, call our office right away. We will check your coverage while getting you in as quickly as possible, because urgent pain should never wait on a phone call to your insurance company first.

Can I use two dental insurance plans at once?

Sometimes, yes. If you are covered under your own plan and also listed as a dependent on a spouse's or parent's plan, coordination of benefits may apply, and we can file both claims to reduce your out-of-pocket cost further. Bring both insurance cards to your visit and our team will sort out the coordination details for you.
